You
will receive a key and comprehensive directions in the post at least a week
before you travel. Please advise us if you need the key earlier.
The
directions information will tell you how to get to Capena by car or
public transport, where to find the local swimming pools and the best
way to travel to Rome for a day out, plus the specific directions to
your apartment, which are also shown below.
The
keys can also be obtained from Pucci Ligresti (who lives nearby and speaks
English), phone (0039) 06 9037 5066(note
that the zero is not omitted after the international code when dialling Italian
numbers) or mobile (0039) 327 4449 951. Please also contact Pucci if you have
any enquiries during your stay.
If you’re intending to hire a car, it’s best to do this when you arrive at the airport. All the major car hire firms are represented at both Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino) and Ciampino airports.
For
a separate charge, a Capena-based taxi can be arranged to pick you up
from the airport or Monterotondo station, and take you back at the end
of your stay. Full details are included in your welcome pack, or you
can contact us for more information.
Directions
to Casa Galilei Address:
Via Galileo Galilei snc, 00060 Capena, Roma ("snc" stands for senza
numero civico – or no street number)
Follow
Via IV Novembre into Via Cecconi, down Via Matteotti into the old village and turn left into Via Marconi at the
fountain (see the map at the bottom of the Maps page).
At the end of Via Marconi you will enter Piazza del Popolo. Drive
through this square and up Via Silla where you can park the car in a
marked parking space. Be careful to park in a a marked space or it may
be towed away.
Alternatively,
you can turn round at this point and follow Via Cristoforo Colombo (the
steep track skirting the west side of the monastery building, with the
valley on your right) about 100m to park outside the lower entrance to
the house. The house is the first you come to on the left. You can’t
miss it because it has obviously been newly restored and it is
accessible up a steep flight of steps to the door. Use the track for
loading and unloading. At present, it is then preferable to drive back
up the track and find a parking space in Via Silla. In the long-term,
car parks will be built in the valley to the west of the square so it
can be pedestrianised and this will also ease the parking situation for
Casa Gallilei.
Top
entrance to the house: walk up the main stairway to the main entrance of the
old monastery building. Continue up the stairs inside and you will emerge in
the medieval village. Walk straight ahead through the arch and then turn right
towards the valley and walk down to the very bottom of the stairs, ignoring the
doorway on your left. You will find two doorways and Casa Galilei's is the one on the right.
